Before there was BareBake, there were two people — Johan and Sunel Bekker — simply trying to live healthier, fitter lives. Like many others, we were caught in the cycle of trying diet after diet, chasing results and feeling frustrated when the scale wouldn’t budge or our energy levels would crash. We loved food (especially baked treats), and we were both active in our own way — Johan with bodybuilding, Sunel with CrossFit — but something wasn’t quite clicking. It wasn’t until we began learning about calorie intake and nutritional balance that everything truly started to change.
The Wake-Up Call
When we first took fitness seriously, we thought we were doing everything right. Training hard, cutting out ‘bad’ foods, loading up on ‘healthy’ ones — but the results didn’t match the effort. The turning point came when we discovered the concept of energy balance and calorie tracking.
What we realised was this: it’s not just about what you eat, but how much. You can eat avocado, nut butters and protein smoothies all day long, but if you’re in a calorie surplus, your body will still store that excess energy. On the other hand, you can have a chocolate bar and still lose weight — if it fits within your daily energy needs. Learning that weight loss was about consistent caloric intake, not cutting out entire food groups, was a complete game changer.
Learning to Fuel Properly
Once we got to grips with calories in versus calories out, we began tracking our meals. At first, it felt overwhelming. But soon it became second nature — not restrictive, but freeing. We were no longer afraid of carbs or fats. We understood exactly what our bodies needed to fuel workouts, build muscle or slim down.
More importantly, we figured out how to make room for the food we truly enjoyed. That’s where the real challenge began — because most shop-bought baked goods were packed with sugar, oil and preservatives. They didn’t align with our goals. We wanted to enjoy a slice of banana bread without completely derailing our progress.
So, we started baking.
The First BareBake Batches
Our kitchen turned into a test lab. Johan, with his love for precision, began experimenting with high-protein, lower-calorie versions of classic bakes. Sunel, with her passion for flavour and texture, made sure they still tasted incredible. We swapped refined sugar for alternatives like erythritol and stevia, and we ditched seed oils altogether.
We baked. We tested. We tracked. And we ate — guilt-free. What started as a way to support our own health goals quickly became something we wanted to share with others.
From Passion Project to Purpose
We realised there were others like us — people who wanted balance, not extremes. People who love a good rusk with their morning coffee but don’t want to sacrifice their progress. People who are mindful of what they eat, but still want to enjoy food.
That’s why we created BareBake — to bring clean, macro-friendly, low-calorie baked goods to the people who need them most. Whether you're watching your calories, counting macros, or just trying to make healthier choices without giving up the joy of baking, we’re here for you.
The Journey Continues
BareBake isn’t just about food — it’s about empowerment. It’s about learning what works for your body and making informed choices. It’s about enjoying the little things, like a slice of banana loaf or a chunky oat rusk, without compromise.
Our journey is far from over, and we’re learning every day. But one thing’s for certain — clean baking matters, and we’re proud to be part of a movement that makes feeling good more accessible, one treat at a time.
